Humans of Seneca Media : Renee Wong
“I worked in the banking industry for three years before leaving and deciding to pursue higher education. The job was steady and I loved the people I worked with, but I felt like I could do more.
It was hard. I was met with resistance from people close to me — why disrupt a sure thing? But the job market isn’t what it used to be, and even a bank job isn’t “a sure thing” anymore as automation takes over even the most complex processes and functions.
I kept going back to this one sentence: if not now, when? When will I take the steps to better myself, both professionally and personally? And if not now, will I only want to unlock my true potential when I am 40? 50? Why should I put a restriction on my education?
What l love about the field of Public Relations is that there is never a standard day. It’s exciting and rewarding, but definitely comes with its own stress! I’ve stayed up more nights than I can count working on assignments, but working with the other people in my program the next day is worth it. I’ve been lucky to have the educational support I do at Seneca College and, with only one month to go, I definitely feel like I’ve become a wiser and more confident person.
To anyone who feels stuck, unsure, and afraid of making the leap to do what you love (for me, that’s interactive digital media): research, research, RESEARCH! And never stop learning.
Depending on your situation, it could be tough, but it will be worth it. Prepare yourself as much as you can. Then, jump!” – Renee Wong
