Seneca Media Unscripted: Storytelling Is Everything ft. Colin D’Mello

"My job is to try to take you, whether it's in your car listening, whether you're in your home watching on television, and put you right beside me, put you in the passenger seat and show you and help you experience what I'm experiencing."

Colin D’Mello may be a household name for many Torontonians who consume the news on a daily basis, but this wasn’t always the case.

Rewind a few years, and he was a Journalism student at Seneca College with a passion for telling stories. Add a few years to that, and he was working in a small radio station in Moncton, New Brunswick. So, how did he go from working small city news circuits to being the Queens Park Bureau Chief for CTV News?

On this week’s Unscripted, we chatted with Colin about the experiences that shaped his love for storytelling from a young age, his positive attitude and hustle that led him to his current position, and his experiences covering some rather grim stories on the way.

Colin talks about the work he did at Seneca that helped him in the industry and discusses the importance of work/life balance in a field that can get pretty heavy He also shares his experience navigating uncertainty as he packed his bags and moved to Moncton with only a radio job to his name, and opens up about how he landed his job as the QP Bureau Chief with pure tenacity and hard work.

There is a wealth of information for Journalism students to take away from this episode. It’s also a lesson in determination for those who dream big and have the will to work for those dreams.

One of our favourite things about this conversation was hearing him speak about his love for telling stories. It was evident right from the start that this is what he was meant to do. The passion he exuded for his craft was infectious and made us want to be journalists for a while too!
