A Message from Beth Agnew for Summer Semester

Choose to Focus on the Good

A Message from School of Media Chair Beth Agnew

Welcome to the start of what I expect will be a very interesting Summer term!

For those of you returning to class, thank you for such great work completing the previous semester with its last-minute challenges and more curve balls than we'd like to have thrown at us.

As classes begin, we know we’re in for a bit of a different summer than any of us expected. But our most important consideration is to keep all of you safe and adhere to Public Health regulations than to fret about what we're missing. We know we’re missing that immersive college experience. And we’re missing the energy of our students and profs in the classroom. As Joni Mitchell sang, “you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone”. However, I am NOT missing the parking lot, and I'm using paradise as my Webex backdrop.

Let me share what I think we should focus on this summer:

  1. Take care of yourself and your family. I know you may have heard this many times already, but this is a reminder that in extended periods of stress, we don't have the same level of coping skills we would normally be able to draw upon. Find a rhythm that suits your learning needs, your schedule, and your resilience. We will be as flexible as we can, and we encourage you to not lose sight of the ultimate goal.

  3. Stay in touch with your profs and check for their updates. They are working to give you as much advance notice as possible for activities, online meetings, and course requirements. They are setting things up to help keep you on track as best they can. Some days will be great. Other days will be rough. No surprise there. But always remember- your profs are here for you.

  5. Do the best you can. Celebrate the victories, no matter how small. We will all remember that the pandemic caused immeasurable disruption but I urge you to focus on the many positives that are coming out of it. Our industries are doing things we never thought possible, and succeeding! We're all learning new skills. We're finding joy in places we never thought to look.

Yes, it will be a challenge. But I know you are all up to the task. And I am confident you will find this summer with us at Seneca Media to have been time very well spent.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me.

I trust you. I appreciate you. I am grateful to all of you. I can't wait to see the wonderful work you'll produce this summer!

Have a great term!
