Above All Else - Take Care of Yourself

A Message from School of Media Chair Beth Agnew

One week into the return to classes, albeit online, and I'm hearing good things about how everyone is tackling our new challenge with optimism, patience, and courage. Thank you, sincerely, for stepping forward bravely into such unknown territory.

We really are breaking new ground here, and as with every exploration, there is some excitement mixed with trepidation.

Please remember to look after yourselves -- your physical, mental and emotional health, and that of your families, friends, and classmates is a priority. Everyone is stressed, anxious, and uncertain.

And I know there is a fine balance between managing your schoolwork and being there for your family and loved ones.

You may be finding yourselves adrift in a sea of unknowns. We are doing what we can to alleviate the educational questions, and there is a huge team at Seneca, and at the School of Media, working on sorting all that out.

More importantly, I recognize that you are cut off from many of the things from which you derived comfort: social gatherings, recreational activities, your communities, even home.

We are here to be your guiding stars.

We want you to know that we're doing everything possible to help you get through. While the educational piece is very important, what is more important is that you feel supported in whatever you're feeling. We hope that you can see this as a huge growth experience that will help you build resilience, creativity, and tenacity. Those are all qualities that will serve you well no matter where you go in life.

Whatever you're feeling in this challenging time is okay. It's okay to feel lost, frustrated, anxious, or scared. But we want to be there for you to help you not dwell on those feelings or problems.

Together, we can focus on solutions. We can focus on what we can do.

And if it all becomes overwhelming, as sometimes it will, don't hesitate to reach out.

I'm here for you. So are all your professors. And the SenecaMedia team!

Call. Write. Wave. Tweet. Zoom. Whatever works.

Thank you again to the students, faculty, and staff of the School of Media for being a community of which I am extremely proud.
